In many computer books, you will find a plethora of definition of a domain name. In a nutshell though, a "domain" refers to a group of computers under one administration, and a "domain name" is the term used to call that group. In the World Wide Web however, definition of a domain name is almost tantamount to the Universal Resource Locater or URL of a website.
Web domain name is utilized in order to bridge computer language and ordinary language. Through easy to remember domain names, computer users are given convenience to just type in the address of the site in a couple of words to access the pages of such site.
The World Wide Web works under the Domain Name System or DNS. In order to create websites, it is important to have two things: a domain name, and domain web host. The domain web host brings the web pages of a domain name to other computer users. It functions like a "storage furniture" or a "display window" of the website, in as much as the content of the site - its articles, links, images, videos, and other materials - is kept, and shown by the web hosting provider.
The Domain Name System has its sets of rules and processes that enable the translation of domain names and host names into Internet Provider addresses. In other words, when online users click the link of a site, or type its name in the address bar, the DNS, in less than seconds, quickly evaluates the definition of a domain name, determine its web host, and then access the files within that web host so that online users can see the contents of the website.
